Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has confirmed that the exemption for international students officially came into force as of March 26, 2021, meaning that eligible students may come back to Canada. For more information on travel restrictions and exemptions, visit the Government of Canada Web page.
Currently, the Canadian government keeps processing study permits, but delays can be longer than usual. Starting January 15, 2022, international students of 18 years old and over will only be allowed to enter the country if they are fully vaccinated with a Canadian approved vaccine. If you need more information, contact Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada Support line at 1-888-242-2100. Exceptionally, during this period, please note that certificates from the College will be provided in electronic format only.
If you are already in Canada, the delays are approximately 2-3 months.
According to the immigration lawyer, the short answer is: yes, a student can begin their studies abroad, without a study permit, and attend classes online. However, it is advisable that you have already applied for your study permit before you begin your program. For LaSalle College Montreal, it is mandatory for students to have an approved CAQ (Québec Acceptance Certificate) before you begin your studies. Any online courses you take from your home country without a study permit will not be accounted for immigration purposes. In other words, if you take our online courses abroad, the period before you apply for a study permit will not be counted for the purposes of later on applying for a permanent visa status. 12. If I start my online studies from my own country without a study permit, if my application for a study permit is later rejected, what is my involvement at that time? You can graduate and obtain a diploma all while attending to class virtually. However, this diploma will not meet the Citizenship and Immigration Canada requirements when applying for subsequent visas – i.e. work permits, permanent residency, etc. You can also request for a refund of your tuition fees if your study permit application is refused after you’ve already begun your program, which will be returned in due time after charging you on pro-rate basis for the number of hours/days/weeks that you have attended the classes.
In the March 29 updated guidelines, IRCC confirms that eligibility for the Post-Graduate Work Permit program will not be affected for international students whose courses are now being delivered online on an exceptional basis due to COVID-19. Due to a temporary COVID-19 policy, students are allowed to complete up to 100% of their studies outside of Canada until August 31, 2021.
In the absence of appropriate language testing facilities on account due to the extraordinary current circumstances, LaSalle College will accept alternative language standardized tests in order to complete an admission request. LaSalle College recommends that its candidates take either the Duolingo English test or the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition test to comply with the admission requirements. LaSalle College reserves the right to ask any candidate for additional proof of their language skills.
Since the beginning of the Fall 2021 semester, the College welcomes its students every day on campus. All sanitary measures are in place to provide you with a safe and secure environment: 1) If you have symptoms related to COVID-19, stay home. You will not be allowed on campus. 2) Wearing a mask is mandatory. 3) Wash your hands as you enter the building. 4) Please keep your distance and respect the signage.
